Charles Henri Leickert

Flemish Belgian, 1816-1907.  Oil on panel, ca. mid-19th c.

After the end of the French occupation in 1815, a new sense of pride emerged in all things Dutch. Charles Leickert worked during this period and gained great notoriety for his winter landscapes and townscapes. Leickert was born in Brussels, kingdom of the Netherlands and began his training at age 11. In 1827 his father enrolled him in The Hague drawing academy. Perhaps Leickert's most influential teacher was Andreas Schelfhout (1787-1870), the renowned landscape artist best known for his winter landscapes. In 1848 Leickert moved to Amsterdam where he lived until 1887. Wanting to establish himself as an independent painter, Leickert knew Amsterdam offered more opportunities to exhibit and sell their work. The years following his arrival in Amsterdam proved to be most successful. It was during this period he produced a wider variety of themes including beach and dune scenes as well as the ever popular winter scenes. In 1887 Leickert decided to end his artistic career and move to Mainz Germany with his wife where he died in 1907. Signature at l/r corner. Newly framed. 13" x 16" including frame.
